The NCCPE Planning for Change website provides guidelines to promote institutional changes that support public engagement. The guidelines are divided into nine focal points that should be addressed when shifting an institution’s culture towards public engagement: mission, leadership, communication, support, learning, recognition, staff, students and public. Each focal point contains specific areas for careful attention and provides helpful resources.

In addition, the website offers the EDGE Tool: a self-assessment tool that institutions can use to (1) evaluate their current support of public engagement in each of the focal points, (2) identify areas for change and (3) access resource packs to facilitate that change.

Users can quickly assess their institutions’ current situation in relation to public engagement and choose which of the nine focal points they want to address. Though the EDGE Tool helps users identify areas for improvement, some complementary tools may be needed to actually initiate institutional change.

Becky Moran (Project Officer):
The website is user-friendly, and all resources are free to access and download. Guidelines are structured so that users can work step-by-step through the process of embedding public engagement in their institutions. Different levels of expertise are taken into account, and specific EDGE tools allow in-depth examination into each focal point. Although the resource is aimed at universities, some questions could be valid for any research institution willing to implement public engagement.
