Responsible Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Integration of Responsible Innovation into Organisational Processes. Policy Recommendations and Insights✎
Pavié, X., Carthy, D., and Scholten, V. (2015), Responsible Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Integration of Responsible Innovation into Organisational Processes. Policy Recommendations and Insights, KARIM Project.
We will base our suggestion for integration of responsible-innovation into organisational process on the basis that three themes provide a useful initial framework in scientific and policy dialogues. This suggests that responsible-innovation should be in line with ethical acceptability, sustainability principles and societal desirability of the innovation process. Outputs and outcomes of the innovation process should therefore reflect these themes. We will introduce a process for achieving responsible-innovation based on five steps for achieving sustainability suggested by Nidumolu et al. (2009). Through our reasoning, we will highlight how this process would provide a solid framework for linking performance, innovation and responsibility by re-defining its organisational process. Once the process for achieving responsible-innovation in the organisation will be established, we will focus on the actual production of sustainable goods and services, also known as the innovation process. Responsibility should also be consistently incorporated into each phase of this process. The results of a study will provide a framework for establishing, measuring and evaluating responsibility within that very same innovation process. Finally, we will introduce the idea of hypotheses for testing the impact a product or service will have on the environment, society and/or economy. Since it is impossible to accurately predict these consequences prior to the launch, it is the firm’s responsibility to ensure it is prepared to act if the product does have a negative impact.
