CHERRIES is an EU funded project aimed at enabling Responsible, Research and Innovation (RRI) policy experiments in the healthcare sector in three European territories – in Murcia (ES), Örebro (SE) and the Republic of Cyprus (CY).

The CHERRIES team applies the RRI framework to mobilise territorial stakeholder ecosystems and engage them into regional pilot actions aimed at:

  1. identifying needs in the healthcare sector at territorial level
  2. encourage the proposition and co-creation of innovative solutions to the identified needs
  3. stimulate institutional reflection processes on how to innovate products and services in the healthcare sector through participatory approaches
  4. present evidence-based recommendations for revision of sectoral policies, strategies and innovation support instruments.

CHERRIES activities

Mapping

The team will start with a mapping exercise covering the regional healthcare stakeholders and policy ecosystems as well as the innovation support ecosystems.

Capacity building

CHERRIES will then train multipliers and key stakeholders for the RRI based demand articulation, experimentation and to the co-creation process. CHERRIES will run a series of regional training events and will release a toolbox providing territories with relevant resources and guidance on how to replicate the experiments in their healthcare ecosystems.

Piloting

It is all set to start the experiment phase! CHERRIES will fund one pilot action per territory that matches a demand of the territorial healthcare sector with a solution that is co-created between the solution provider and sectoral stakeholders.

Phase 1 – the challenge
→ Publishing of a call for needs
→ Collection and analysis of sectoral needs per territory
→ Selection of demand for call per territory
→ Development of a call that incorporates the sectoral demand and RRI principles

Phase 2 – the solution
→ Publishing a call for solution
→ Evaluation and selection of a solution provider
→ Co-creation of pilots and project monitoring

Design a responsible and demand-oriented territorial policy mix

CHERRIES team will collect the learnings of these phases to embed them in the territorial policy mixes and strategies while giving the territorial stakeholder groups an active role in shaping their environment.

Monitoring

CHERRIES will monitor and assess the impact of the regional experiments and of the overall action measuring the impact of the project in terms of how it contributes to the change of the 11 sub-dimension MoRRI indicators and to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG3 ‘Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages’.

Mutual learning

CHERRIES team will facilitate the learning exchange between the three pilot regions and beyond through dedicated workshops and webinars so to build a wider European community of actors and territories interested in testing and implementing CHERRIES approaches.

Sustainability

A recruitment campaign will be launched to select at least 3 more regions – the so called CHERRIES Mirror Regions – who will benefit from personalised support to implement the CHERRIES model and learnings in their own territories, leveraging their own territorial resources.

------

With this innovative design processes, CHERRIES aims to contribute to more open, transparent and democratic R&I systems in the engaged territories and beyond, creating societal, democratic, environmental, economic and scientific impacts as well as tackling transformation processes of the organisations involved.

CHERRIES is piloting a new RRI driven participatory approach to shape territorial R&I policies in the healthcare sector.

The CHERRIES Toolbox will be aimed at providing European territories with relevant resources and guidance on how to build and replicate RRI experiments in their healthcare ecosystems.

On one side the Toolbox– together with other activities – will support the design and implementation of the territorial experiments, on the other side it will enable the capacity building of territorial stakeholders preparing them for the RRI based demand articulation, experimentation and co-creation process within the three regions.

The tools and resources of the two parts of the toolbox will be available on the website at the beginning of 2021 with a guidance for their access and use. Follow us on our social media accounts or subscribe for our newsletter to get the latest updates

CHERRIES is powered by 11 partners from 7 European countries – Austria, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, the Republic of Cyprus, Spain and Sweden.

The team is highly inter- and transdisciplinary, building on long lasting experiences in RRI, territorial innovation and smart specialisation strategies and healthcare policy and research.

Coordinated by ZSI, the consortium brings together heterogeneous actors of the innovation ecosystem, including small and medium enterprises, research institutions, universities, territorial authorities, a hospital and a Civil Society Organisation.
